  • 1897 - 19 unarmed immigrant miners are killed by a sheriff's posse in Lattimer, Pennsylvania in what came to be called the Lattimer Massacre. 
  • 2008 - The Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland is powered up.
