Durham, NH (January 9, 2025) – Being the gateway to the White Mountains, Plymouth, New Hampshire, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history and a vibrant community spirit. From exploring the outdoors to experiencing world-class arts and culture, Plymouth has something for everyone. Join host Rebecca Rule as she explores this college town that sits along the Pemigewasset River. OUR HOMETOWN PLYMOUTH premieres on Thursday, January 23rd at 8:30 p.m. on New Hampshire PBS.
“Plymouth is a place where you can eat great food, see amazing performances, and, ‘oh by the way’, you can go to school too,” said Rule. “This is a college town and it has been since the 1860s. As the school grew from a small teacher’s college to a full-fledged university, so did the town.”
The spirit of Plymouth shines through its residents' dedication to helping others. Local Rotarians have raised millions of dollars to support Ukrainian refugees, while organizations like Bridge House takes care of its own and helps rebuild lives by ending homeless.
Rule believes that desire for connection is at the heart of all stories. “I really believe that stories connect us,” she said. “When you have the town as the impetus for the story, that makes it even richer.”
Among the stories featured in OUR HOMETOWN: PLYMOUTH are a behind-the-scenes look at a popular local thrift store, a comeback story about the city’s elm trees, a look at the fellowship that volunteers and visitors, and sometimes even their grandchildren, find at the Plymouth Regional Senior Center, and a coming-of-age story set during a covert visit to The Hoochie Coochie Show at the Plymouth State Fair.
“It’s continually surprising,” shared Rule during a recent conversation about the next installment of the series, OUR HOMETOWN: PLYMOUTH. “We think we know these towns. I’ve been to Plymouth many times. I know people who live in Plymouth. I know where it is. But you don’t know the town until you get there.”
The half-hour special features seven stories; the remaining stories will be produced as short videos to view online. Viewers are encouraged to go to the OUR HOMETOWN PLYMOUTH website to watch the stories and share them with their families, friends and neighbors.
OUR HOMETOWN: PLYMOUTH will premiere on NHPBS on Thursday, January 23rd at 8:30 p.m. on New Hampshire PBS with multiple airdates on NHPBS and NHPBS EXPLORE, online at nhpbs.org/hometown/plymouth and on the PBS App.
The OUR HOMETOWN series premiered in 2015 with a focus on Peterborough, followed by shows about Colebrook, Stratham, Wolfeboro, Milford, Littleton, Conway, Ashland, Nottingham, Nashua and Berlin.
