PINKERTON ACADEMY WINS GRANITE STATE SUPERCHALLENGE

(DURHAM, May 17, 2014) - Pinkerton Academy may have begun this season of Granite State Challenge as an underdog – having competed in a qualifying game to make the final roster of teams – but they pulled off an upset win Saturday night beating Bishop Guertin High School by a score of 250-220 in this year's Granite State SuperChallenge season finale. The lead bounced between teams throughout the match, but Pinkerton was able to pull away in the final rounds and hold on for a victory. This is the first time in 20 years that Pinkerton Academy has made it to the final round of Granite State Challenge. "What an excellent game! Five more minutes, or even two more minutes to play and it could have been a completely different result. Congratulations to the Bishop Guertin team and coach! Everyone needs to be on the lookout for this team going forward – they are only going to get better," noted Pinkerton coach Peter Crowell. “It was a rough loss certainly, but Pinkerton played an outstanding game. It felt like it could've gone either way, but they definitely outplayed us today and deserve to be advancing. I'll certainly be rooting for them in the Governor's Cup. Hopefully we'll be back next year!" said Bishop Guertin captain Timothy Morrison. Pinkerton Academy was represented by captain Ben Foley, Sara Tridenti, Jake Hudgins and Joe Ronca, and led by coaches Peter Crowell and Pam Griswold. Watch this and all the matches online >> Pinkerton Academy will represent New Hampshire in the special NH-MA Governor's Cup game which airs Sat., May 24th at 6:30 p.m. They will compete against the winner of WGBH's High School Quiz Show. Granite State Challenge began the season with 16 Granite State high school teams battling for the coveted SuperChallenge title and brainy bragging rights. It takes a winning combination of knowledge, teamwork, grace under pressure, and a quick buzzer reflex to play Granite State Challenge. The show brings New Hampshire's top high school academic teams head-to-head in lively competition. The game emphasizes quick recall of material in all major disciplines - math, science, social studies, language and fine arts - along with a mix of questions about current events, entertainment, sports, and regional topics. Host Jim Jeannotte poses the Challenge questions to the teams; Lori Warriner interviews team members. The winner of the Granite State SuperChallenge receives $1,000, a trophy and a champion banner for their school; the runner-up school receives $500 and a trophy.
