My wife's Aunt in Saco, Maine made the original recipe. When my wife and I we were married, we mixed regular potatoes with sweet potatoes and parsnips.
Cook in large crock pot
- 1 lb. hamburger
- 6 onions, chopped
- 2/3 Cub barley
- 2 #1 cans crushed tomatoes
- 3 Cups water
- 1 T sale
- 1t black pepper (whole corns)
- 6 carrots (or 3 carrots and 3 parsnips)
- 2-3 white potatoes
- 2 - 3 sweet potatoes
- 4 - 6 stalks celery
- 2 t steak sauce
- 2 t Worcestershire sauce
- Brown meat with onions. Drain fat
- Add meat and onion mixture to pot with veggies and flavorings into pot.
- Add tomatoes and water (not quite covering the ingredients)
- Simmer on low for at least 12 hours.
