PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest Launches

NHPTV Invites K – 5th Graders to Submit Original Illustrated Stories

(Durham, January 26, 2010) – Kids, grab your pencils, crayons, markers, and paints! New Hampshire Public Television is waiting for your best, original, illustrated stories! Children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to enter the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, sponsored by New Hampshire Public Television; the deadline for entries is March 24, 2010. The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest promotes the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning and celebrates the power of creating original illustrated stories. Children who enter the contest will receive a Certificate of Achievement. A panel of judges will review entries in April, and first-, second- and third-place winners will be selected in each grade level, and their stories will be presented on NHPTV’s website. Local first place winners in grades K-3 advance to the national competition. An awards ceremony will be held in June at the NHPTV Broadcasting Center in Durham to recognize the winners. “Kids naturally have a keen sense of curiosity and incredible imaginations,” notes Peter A. Frid, President and CEO of New Hampshire Public Television. “The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest provides an opportunity for children to express their ideas while fostering key early literacy skills such as story-telling.” Applications and information about the contest are at nhptv.org/kidswrite. The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest extends the success of the long-popular national Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, which ended last year. Guidelines for participation in the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest are similar to those of the Reading Rainbow contest. PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest is made possible with support from NEA New Hampshire. The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest is produced by WNED-TV, Buffalo/Toronto and PBS, and is part of PBS KIDS Raising Readers, a national initiative which uses the power of public media to build the reading skills of children ages 2-to-8, with an emphasis on children from low-income families. The effort is funded by a Ready To Learn grant from the U.S. Department of Education, part of a cooperative agreement with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), PBS and The Ready To Learn Partnership. PBSKIDSGO.org New Hampshire Public Television Knowledge Network educational services are recognized as a trusted and highly valued resource for outstanding media-rich programs, services, and resources. They promote excellence in teaching and learning for educators, childcare providers, parents, students, and learners of all ages. NHPTV airs more than 55 hours of quality PBS children’s programming each week.
