• 1941 -  Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt calls December 7 to be "a date which will live in infamy", and the U.S. declares war on Japan.
• 1953 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivers his "Atoms for Peace" speech.
• 1980 - Musician John Lennon is murdered in front of The Dakota in New York City.
• 1987 - The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty is signed by President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
