• 1797 - The Navy frigate USS Constitution is launched in Boston Harbor.
• 1805 -  A British fleet under the command of Admiral Horatio Nelson defeats a French and Spanish fleet in the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson dies in the battle.
• 1940 - Ernest Hemingway's novel For Whom the Bell Tolls is published
• 1975 - Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk hit a home run off the left-field foul pole in Fenway Park in a 7-6 win in Game 6 of the World Series against the Cincinnati Red.
