Today is Columbus Day, National Farmer's Day, Native American Day, Pumpkin Pie Day, and National Gumbo Day.

• 539 - The army of Cyrus the Great of Persia takes Babylon, and ends the Babylonian empire.
• 1492 - Christopher Columbus' first expedition makes landfall in the Caribbean.
• 1692 -The Salem witch trials end.
• 1810- The citizens of Munich hold the first Oktoberfest.
• 1901 - President Theodore Roosevelt officially changes the name of the Executive Mansion to the White House.
• 1918 - The Cloquet fire in northern Minnesota kills 453 people.
  1960 - Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev pounds his shoe on a desk at a session of the  U.N. General Assembly.
• 2000 - An al-Qaeda suicide bombing kills 17 sailors on the Navy destroyer Cole in Aden, Yemen.
