• 1862 - The  Second Battle of Bull Run, also known as the Battle of Second Manassas, begins.
• 1955 - Black teenager Emmett Till is murdered in Mississippi,
• 1957 - Senator Strom Thurmond begins a 24 hour and 18-minute filibuster to block the Senate from voting on the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
• 1963 - Martin Luther King leads the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom where he gives his I Have a Dream speech.
• 1964 - Race riots erupt in Philadelphia.
• 1968 - Violence breaks out between police and anti-war demonstrators and bystanders at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
• 1996 - Britain's Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorce.
