NHPBS Kids Writers Contest

Winners Announced

(DURHAM, July 2, 2018) –

What do tree frogs, quadrilaterals and boastful dandelions all have in common? They were all the subjects of winning stories submitted by children from across New Hampshire and beyond in the 2018 NHPBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST.

The NHPBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST encourages children to explore the power of creativity by writing and illustrating their own stories. It promotes reading skills through hands-on, active learning. This is the 24th year NHPBS has hosted a story-writing contest, and more than 12,500 children have participated over the years. An awards ceremony for the first, second and third place winners was held at the NHPBS Broadcast Center in Durham on June 30, 2018.

“New Hampshire PBS is proud to sponsor the NHPBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST. The contest underscores our commitment to learning and creative expression,” said Susan Adams, NHPTV’s Educational Services Manager. “The process of creative writing helps develop academic skills and improves a child’s self-confidence, creativity and imagination.”

The NHPBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST is part of NHPBS's commitment to promoting a love of reading, writing and creative expression in children. The contest aligns with New Hampshire state writing and reading standards and is made possible with support from Heinemann, the NH Lottery and Parenting NH.

You will find a list a list of the 2018 top ten contest winners below. The winning stories were chosen by a panel of judges, including local educators and librarians. You can read all of the stories submitted to the contest at  nhptv.org/kidswrite.
