WINNERS OF 2014 NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST ANNOUNCED

– More than 450 Students in K – Third Grade Submitted Stories – (DURHAM, April 23, 2014) — Poetry about the seasons, a ring-toss game between a cat and a moose, and a day of skiing were among the subjects of winning stories in the New Hampshire Public Television–PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST. Over 450 creative entries were received from children in K – 3rd grade, and 85 stories were chosen for first place, second place, third place and honorable mention recognition. NHPTV’s first-place winners will compete with the winners from other public television stations in the national PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST. The NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST encourages children in K – 3rd grade to explore the power of creativity by writing and illustrating their own stories. It promotes reading skills through hands-on, active learning. This is the 20th year NHPTV has hosted a writing and illustrating contest for children, and more than 10,000 children have participated over the years. The first-, second-, and third-place winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony May 10th at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester. Author Diane Mayr will speak at the ceremony. She is a librarian and a long-time New Hampshire resident whose children’s books include Littlebat's Halloween Story, Run, Turkey, Run!, and Out and About at the Apple Orchard. “By taking this contest into my kindergarten class, I was able to introduce the world of writing to so many youngsters. It is by far my favorite part of teaching every year,” commented Kimberly Carrier, a kindergarten teacher in Nashua. “To see the children go from one thought to an entire story is simply amazing.” “We are inspired by the enthusiasm and talent demonstrated by the students’ stories,” said NHPTV President and CEO Peter Frid. “And this contest advances NHPTV’s commitment to helping grow children’s literacy skills while encouraging expression and imagination.” The NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST is part of NHPTV's commitment to promoting a love of reading, writing, and creative expression in children. The contest aligns with New Hampshire state writing and reading standards, and is made possible with support from Heinemann, Fidelity Investments, and Lincoln Financial.
