"Math, Engineering, Science and You" Micro-Series Recognized by NETA

NHPTV’s “MESY” Education Initiative Wins Award

(DURHAM, January 27, 2011) — Getting “MESY” just led New Hampshire Public Television to win an award. An on-air and online series of “MESY Moments” promotional spots for NHPTV’s “Math, Science, Engineering and You!” education initiative recently received an award from the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA). The MESY project is designed to engage and excite students, parents, educators and community leaders about the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math). The MESY Moments are the broadcast component of the education initiative which demonstrates how science, math and engineering are used by everyone in a variety of situations. Introduced by famed NH inventor and founder of FIRST, Dean Kamen, MESY Moments explore the “science behind the trick shot” in billiards, a high school student’s architecture project and how she used math, engineering and physics, and how members of the Oyster River High School Jazz Band use math to read, play and compose music. The MESY Moments are airing on New Hampshire Public Television and are online at nhptv.org/mesy. MESY has a strong online presence that features hundreds of reviewed web sites that are aligned to NH curriculum standards, interactive games and activities, videos and profiles of famed mathematicians, engineers and scientists. Of the MESY Moment micro-series, the NETA judges said, “We loved the enthusiasm that every scientist /musician /person in every spot had. It conveyed the feeling of inspiration. Highly effective in showing how science, math and engineering are used by all types of people in all types of places.” The MESY Moments were created by Susan Adams, NHPTV Educational Services manager; Phil Vaughn, producer; and Montana West, integrated media producer.
