  • 1777 -  American defenders of Fort Mercer on the Delaware River repulse repeated Hessian attacks in the Battle of Red Bank.
  • 1746 - Esther de Berdt Reed was born on this date in 1746. She was the wife of Joseph Reed, president of the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and was active in organizing relief for soldiers during the Revolutionary War.
