Bishop Guertin Defeats Lin-Wood

(DURHAM, APRIL 11, 2021) – The Cardinals of Bishop Guertin High defeated the Lin-Wood Lumberjacks in the second game of a new season of Granite State Challenge.

Playing for the Cardinals of Bishop Guertin were Captain Amelia Ballingall, Chris Swanson, Daniel Enright, Ian Winiarski, and alternates Mary Connolly and Jesse Lu. The team was coached by Kathryn Gann. Bishop Guertin High is a private Catholic school located in Nashua, NH.

The Lumberjacks of Lin-Wood High were represented by Captain Seven Fitzgerald, Blake Tower, Sydney Pickering, and Andrew Wilson. The team was coached by Dave Webster. Lin-Wood is a K-12 public school located in Lincoln, NH in Grafton County. It serves the towns of Lincoln and Woodstock and has an enrollment of around 92 high school students. 

In the first round of the game, correct answers are worth ten 10 points. Bishop Guertin played a strong first round and ended the round with a lead of 190-30 over the Lumberjacks of Linwood. 

In the second round, correct answers are worth 20 points. Seven Fitzgerald of Linwood was quick on the buzzer and answered the first question of the round, - This singer, often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" is known for the songs "Jailhouse Rock" and "Blue Suede Shoes"  - by correctly identifying Elvis Presley, picking up 20 points for her team.  Ian Winiarski of Bishop Guertin picked up 20 points for Bishop Guertin by correctly identifying Barry Goldwater as the 1964 Republican candidate for President.  Lin-Wood came right back and when Sydney Pickering correctly answered a question about Marco Polo and Seven Fitzgerald got the Picture Question right and correctly identified a kangaroo rat. While Lin-Wood tried to close the gap, at the end of the round, Bishop Guertin had a lead of 410-130.

The third round of the game is the Three Strikes and You're Out Round. Each team picks a 10-question category and each team member, starting with the captain, gets one question. The team continues to answer questions until they miss three questions. If a team answers all 10 questions correctly, they pick up an additional 10 points.

Lin-Wood chose the category "Three O’s " in which all of the answers were words with three letter O's.   They answered correctly on monopoly, tomorrow, cocoon, and sophomore and missed on Colorado, locomotive, and bonobo, ending the round with a pickup of 40 points.

Bishop Guertin picked the category "Get Some Sleep." The answers to all of the questions in the category would be related to sleep. They missed a question about cat naps, correctly identified Sleeping Beauty and REM, and missed questions about the children's book, Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and the song "Enter Sandman" by Metallica, ending their round with a pickup of 20 points. At the end of the round, the score was Bishop Guertin 430 and Lin-Wood170.

In the final round, correct answers are worth 20 points, but an incorrect answer will cost a team 20 points and leads can be quickly lost or gained. Bishop Guertin picked up the first 20 points in the round correctly identifying the British pop group, the Spice Girls, and Lin-Wood came right back with a correct answer about the Greek warrior Achilles. Bishop Guertin took control of the game answering the next four questions correctly. Both teams were unable to identify author Doris Kearns Goodwin and Bishop Guertin lost 20 points when they were unable to identify Galileo Galilei as the astronomer who named four of Jupiter's moons the Medicean stars in honor of Cosimo II de' Medici and his three brothers. Despite that miss, Bishop Guertin went on to win the game by a final score of 670-190.

Bishop Guertin now moves on to the quarterfinals where they will meet Manchester Central High School.
