Souhegan High Squeaks By Fall Mountain Regional High

So, do you know what New England's largest sports venue is by seating capacity?  The teams from Souhegan High and Fall Mountain Regional High both struggled with that question in the third game of GRANITE STATE CHALLENGE.

This was a tight game from start to finish. In the last seconds of Round One, Morgan from Fall Mountain correctly identified Scheherazade as the story teller who told over 1,000 tales over 1,001 nights to save herself from being beheaded, giving her team a slight 110-100 lead. 

At the end of Round Two, where correct answers are worth 20 points, Fall Mountain extended their lead to 270-200. Both teams scored 60 points in the  60-second round, and the two teams went into the last round with Fall Mountain in the lead by 70 points. But in the final round of the game, where correct answers are worth 20 points, but an incorrect answer will cost a team 20 points, no lead is safe!

The lead went back-and-forth in the final round, and with one minute left in the game Fall Mountain had a slim 10-point lead with a score of 370-360.  Fall Mountain picked up 20 points with a correct answer about the port city of Shanghai, but lost those points with an incorrect answer about the literary term malapropism. 

With only 15 seconds left in the game, Hunter from Souhegan correctly identified Utah as the home of Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park, and at the buzzer Patrick named the Three Musketeers as the novel in which you would find Aramis, Athos and Porthos -  giving Souhegan 420-370 nail-biter of a win over Fall Mountain.  

Playing for the Sabers of Souhegan High were captain Alec Reitter, Hunter Raudelunas, Kate Eastland. Patrick Conway and alternates  Ian Lewis and Kelly Frasca. The team was coached by Dave Jasinski and Jace Lamarre.

The Fall Mountain Wildcats were represented by Brendan Reagan, Jacob Bradley, Morgan Snelling, and captain George Gowdy along with alternates Isabel Bushway and James Blair.  The team was coached by Nick Belsky.

Souhegan will now go on to face either Manchester Central High or Portsmouth Christian Academy in the second game of the Quarter Finals on Saturday, April 6 at 6 pm on NHPBS.

Manchester Central High and Portsmouth Christian Academy meet in the next Round One game on Saturday, February 23 at 6 pm on NHPBS.

Oh, and about that question both teams missed - the largest sports venue in New England by seating capacity is the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. It seats over 88,000 fans. Gillette Stadium in Foxborough seats around 67,000.
