NH STUDENTS VOTE IN MOCK ELECTION; CLINTON TAKES PRESIDENT, HASSAN TAKES SENATE AND SUNUNU TAKES GOV

(DURHAM, NH, November 7, 2016) — More than 10,000 New Hampshire students cast their ballots last week in the statewide 2016 New Hampshire Mock Election and voted to elect as the first woman president Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Sponsored by New Hampshire Public Television, students in grades K-12 from 126 schools and classrooms participated in this historic election.

Presidential nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton garnered 46% (4,565) and topped Republican Donald J. Trump, who received 41% (4,127). Libertarian party nominee Gary Johnson received 8% (848) and Green party nominee Jill Stein came in at 3% (302).

Democrat Maggie Hassan took 50% (4,003) of the vote, edging out Republican incumbent Kelly Ayotte at 38% (3,016) for the U.S. Senate seat.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Sununu gained 49% (3,755) of the vote, beating Democratic nominee Colin Van Ostern at 40% (3,075).

New Hampshire District One students chose Republican incumbent Frank Guinta for U.S. House by giving him 43% (1,933) of the vote. Democrat Carol Shea-Porter received 35% (1,585) with a Libertarian and two Independent candidates taking a combined 21% (949).

District Two students chose U.S. House Democratic incumbent Ann McLane Kuster with 47% (1,443), beating Republican hopeful Jim Lawrence at 40% (1,240).

New Hampshire Public Television’s general mock election began in 1996. “The New Hampshire Mock Election is an opportunity for students to learn about the electoral process firsthand,” notes Susan Adams, New Hampshire Public Television’s manager of educational services. “Research shows that students who participate in voting simulations are more likely to vote when they are of age. The mock election shows them how much their votes matter.”
