1776 – Richard Henry Lee presents "Lee Resolution" to the Continental Congress.

ON THIS DATE

  • 1776 - Richard Henry Lee of Virginia proposes that the Continental Congress draft a resolution calling for a Declaration of Independence.
  • 1892 - Homer Plessy is arrested after refusing to leave his seat in the "whites-only" car of a train.
  • 1929 - Vatican City becomes a sovereign state.
  • 1942 - The Battle of Midway ends.
  • 1965 -The Supreme Court rules in Griswold v. Connecticut that states cannot criminalize the use of contraception by married couples.
  • 2003 - New Hampshire Episcopalians elect an openly gay man, the Rev. V. Gene Robinson, to be bishop.
