1740 – Arthur Lee was born on this date in 1740. Lee was a physician, diplomat, and abolitionist from Virginia. He negotiated and signed the 1778 Treaty of Alliance with France, along with Benjamin Franklin and Silas Deane. The treaty formalized both the financial and military support of France for the Revolutionary government of the colonies.
