  • 1618 - Sir Walter Raleigh is beheaded for conspiring against King James I.
  • 1787 -  Mozart's opera Don Giovanni is performed for the first time in Prague.
  • 1901 - Serial killer nurse Jane Toppan "Jolly Jane" is arrested in Amherst, Massachusetts for murdering the Davis family of Boston with an overdose of morphine.
  • 1929 - The New York Stock Exchange crashes in what became known as Black Tuesday.
  • 1940 - The U.S. begins its first peacetime military draft.
  • 1956 - Israel invaded Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
  • 1969 - The first-ever computer-to-computer link is established on ARPANET, which is the precursor to the internet.
  • 1991 - The Galileo spacecraft becomes the first probe to visit an asteroid when it passes by 951 Gaspra on its way to Jupiter.
  • 1998 - 77-year-old former astronaut and senator John Glenn becomes the oldest person to go into space when he blasts off on the Space Shuttle Discovery
  • 2002 - Hurricane Sandy hits the east coast of the United States, killing 148 and leaving behind $70 billion in damages.
  • 2015 - After 35 years, China announces the end of its One-child policy.
