1788 - The Philadelphia Convention sets the date for the first U.S. presidential election and names New York City as the temporary capital.
1948 - Maine's Margaret Chase Smith is elected to the U.S. Senate and becomes the first woman to serve in both the House and the Senate.
1971 - State police and National Guardsmen storm Attica Prison in New York to stop rioting.
1989 - Desmond Tutu leads the largest anti-apartheid march ever held in South Africa.
1993 - Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat sign the Oslo Accords at the White House granting Palestine limited autonomy.
SCHOOLS THAT CHANGE COMMUNITIES Tuesday, 9/13 from 2-3 pm NH WORLD K-12 public schools in five states - Massachusetts, Maryland, South Dakota, Oregon, and California - are tackling educational reform at the local level. Principals, teachers, students, residents, and others discuss place- and community-based education, an interdisciplinary approach that emphasizes hands-on, curiosity-based investigation using the surrounding community and neighborhoods as "living" classrooms.
SHAW RISING Tuesday, 9/13 from 3-4 pm NH WORLD Shaw University started in 1865 with a bible class for newly freed slaves in Raleigh, North Carolina, and fought prejudice post-Civil War, to become a co-educational college, teaching medicine, law, and religion. Despite Jim Crow laws, Shaw rises again during the Civil Rights Movement and today, as the oldest Historically Black College in the South, continues to face challenges to its existence. BECOMING TRAUMA RESPONSIVE Tuesday, 9/13 from 4-5 pm NH WORLD Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, schools across the United States strained to meet the social and emotional needs of students. Most school districts reported significant increases in depression and general anxiety from students and educators alike, underscoring the need for trauma-informed training, practices, and resources. LOSING LAMBERT: A JOURNEY THROUGH SURVIVAL AND HOPE Tuesday, 9/13 from 10:30-11 pm NHPBS Kathy O'Hern Fowler, who lost her 16-year-old son to suicide in 1995, spent years struggling with the loss and grief.
