- 1944 - Jackie Robinson refuses to move to the back of an Army bus and later faces a court-martial.
- 1944 - 168 people die and 700 are injured in a fire at an afternoon performance of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Hartford, CT.
