  • 1973 - Singer Jim Croce and five others die when their plane crashes on takeoff at Natchitoches Regional Airport in Louisiana.
  • 2001 - President George W. Bush declares a "War on Terror" in an address to a joint session of Congress.
  • 2011 - The United States military ends its "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.
  • 2017 -  Hurricane Maria makes landfall in Puerto Rico, leading to nearly 3,000 deaths and over 90 billion dollars in damages.
