- 1844 - Church of Later Day Saints founder Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum are killed by a mob at the jail in Carthage, Illinois.
- 1950 -.President Truman orders Air Force and Navy into the Korean War.
- 1957 - Hurricane Audrey makes landfall near the Texas–Louisiana border, killing over 400 people, making it the 7th most deadly hurricane to hit the U.S.
- 1969 - Patrons at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village, clash with police.
- 1980 - President Jimmy Carter signs legislation that reinstates draft registration.
