- 1848 - Mexico ratifies the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending the Mexican-American War and ceding California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of some other states to the US for $15 million.
- 1921 - Congress passes the Emergency Quota Act establishing quotas on immigration.
