  • 1966 - The first Kwanzaa is celebrated.
  • 1991 - The Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union meets and formally dissolves the Soviet Union.
  • 2004 - An earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggers tsunamis that kill 227,898 in coastal areas of Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.
