  • 1874 -  Thomas Nast cartoon in Harper's Weekly first uses the elephant as a symbol for the Republican Party.
  • 1911 - Marie Curie is awarded a Nobel Prize in chemistry. It is her second Nobel Prize. Eight years earlier she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. 
  • 1913  - The first day of the massive blizzard known as the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, which killed 250 individuals.
  • 1916 - Montana republican Jeannette Rankin becomes the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress.
  • 1916 - Woodrow Wilson (D) defeats former Governor of New York Charles Evans Hughes (R) and is reelected as President.
  • 1916 - 46 people are killed when the Boston Elevated Railway Company's streetcar No. 393 smashes through the warning gates of the open Summer Street drawbridge and plunge into the Fort Point Channel.
  • 1917 - Russian Bolshevik forces led by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin overthrow the provisional government of Alexander Kerensky.
  • 1944 - FDR defeats Thomas E. Dewey and is elected to a record fourth term as President.
  • 1954 - Armistice Day becomes Veterans Day.
  • 1967 - President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, creating the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
  • 1972 - President Richard Nixon (R) defeats George McGovern (D) and is re-elected President.
  • 1989 - Douglas Wilder of Virginia becomes the first elected African American governor in the U.S. 
  • 1991 - Basketball player Magic Johnson announces that he is HIV-positive.
  • 2006 - Minnesota democrat  Keith Ellison becomes the first Muslim elected to Congress.
