Anne Bradstreet (c. 1621-1672)

Anne BradstreetAnne Dudley was born in North Hampton, England in 1612. Her father was a steward for the Earl of Lincoln. She was well-educated for a woman of her time and studied history, literature, and languages. At 16 she married Simon Bradstreet. Bradstreet was the son of a Puritan minister and an assistant in the MassachusettsBay Company. Anne and her husband, along with her parents, emigrated to America in 1630. Anne and her husband had eight children. Anne, who had always loved poetry, began writing her own. Her poetry was about religion and family life. Her first collection of poetry, "The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America, By a Gentlewoman of Those Parts" was published in England in 1650.
