(DURHAM, April 3, 2021) – The Rams of Raymond High fell to the Little Green of Manchester Central in the first game of Granite State Challenge.
Playing for the Little Green of Manchester Central High were Captain Jonas Weissberg, Kellen Barbee, Akshay Manchanda, and Tyler Cotton. The team was coached by Lorraine Meyette. Manchester Central High is located in Hillsborough County and enrolls around 1532 students.
The Rams of Raymond High were represented by Captain Isabella daSilva, Mackenzie Ferm, Wyatt Cramer, Lydia Cramer, and alternate Caoilainn Cole. The team was coached by Joshua Forkey. Raymond High is located in Rockingham Country and has an enrollment of around 420 students.
In the first round of the game, correct answers are worth ten 10 points. Manchester came out of the gate strong and at the end of the first round held a lead of 150-40 over Raymond High
. In the second round, correct answers are worth 20 points. Early in the round, Manchester picked up points on questions about pumice and Louis Braille, while Raymond picked up points for a question about Katie Perry and correctly identified the pumpkin as the state fruit of New Hampshire. Both teams were unable to answer questions about Albert Camus and the painter Jonathan Singleton Copley. At the end of the round, Manchester Central extended their lead by a score of 330-100.
The third round of the game is the Three Strikes and You're Out Round. Each team picks a 10-question category and each team member, starting with the captain, gets one question. The team continues to answer questions until they miss three questions. If a team answers all 10 questions correctly, they pick up an additional 10 points.
Raymond chose the category "Nicknames." In the category, they had to identify U.S. Presidents by their nicknames. They missed on Tricky Dick for Richard Nixon, got Abraham Lincoln for Honest Abe, missed Old Hickory for Andrew Jackson, and missed George Washington for Cincinnatus, ending the round for them with a pickup of 10 points.
Manchester Central picked the category "Oh Danny Boy." The answers to all of the questions in the category would be someone named Dan or Daniel. They missed a question about Daniel Tiger, correctly identified actor Daniel Radcliffe, missed a question about actor Dan Levy and one about frontiersman Daniel Boone, ending their round with a pickup of 10 points. At the end of the round, the score was Manchester Central 340 and Raymond 110.
In the final round, correct answers are worth 20 points, but an incorrect answer will cost a team 20 points and leads can be quickly lost or gained. Manchester came out strong and correctly answered five questions in the opening minutes of the round. They never let go and in the ned won the match by a score of 780-110.
Manchester now moves on to the quarterfinals where they will meet either Bishop Guertin or Lin-Wood.
