Manchester Central Defeats Bishop Guertin

GRANITE STATE CHALLENGE

(DURHAM, March 11, 2018) Quick! Which baseball player was known as the Say Hey Kid? The answer to this lightning round question — Willie Mays — was one of just a few that went unanswered in a heated game of Granite State Challenge. Manchester Central High School came from behind in the final round to best Bishop Guertin High School in one of the highest scoring games of the season so far. The final score was 440 to 410.

The Manchester Central Little Green were represented by captain Tamsin Weissberg, Connor Hamel, Karishma Manchanda, and Declan Knieriem, and alternates Monericka Semeran, and Maxwell Nakos and were coached by Lorraine Meyette. The Bishop Guertin Cardinals were represented by captain Holly Boivin, Gabby Paquet, Jack Groenveld-Mejer, and Nathan Brodeur, and alternates Mary Duffy, and Amelia Ballingall and were coached by Lisa LaRochelle.

“During the 4^th round, we all were on the edge of our seats,” said Little Green coach Lorraine Meyette. “It was one of the most exciting matches ever!”

Manchester Central now advances to the quarterfinals of Granite State Challenge. Hosted by Jim Jeannotte, the popular quiz contest began the season with Granite State Challenge Super Sunday at Manchester Community College. 46 New Hampshire high school teams took a qualifying test to secure one of only 16 spots on Granite State Challenge. At the conclusion of the season, this year’s Granite State Challenge champion will move on to compete in the first-ever High School Quiz Show Invitational at WGBH in Boston against the winners of Maine Public’s High School Quiz Show: Maine . The winner of that game will face the winner of the semifinal game between Massachusetts and Rhode Island in a battle to decide the High School Quiz Show Invitational champion.

New Hampshire's top high school academic teams demonstrate remarkable teamwork, quick thinking and smarts as they play Granite State Challenge. The game emphasizes quick recall of math, science, social studies, language arts, and fine arts facts—along with questions about current events, entertainment, sports, and New Hampshire.
