In this conversation with Kelly Corrigan, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg speaks about the connection between transportation and a person's ability to flourish in America. Over the course of his career, Buttigieg has seen firsthand how social, economic, and literal mobility are intimately bound. Propelled by the values of equity, safety, and innovation, Buttigieg walks us through what it means to build a world-leading transportation system to meet the needs of all Americans, especially in the face of growing climate and economic shifts. Reflecting on his life's path, Buttigieg talks about how serving two terms as mayor of his hometown in South Bend, Indiana, has helped him develop a philosophy that champions public service. He speaks about how his faith has helped to clarify his inner purpose of being useful to others, especially those with less means. He also discusses how his seven years as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve taught him to form deep connections with people from radically different backgrounds. As the first openly gay person to serve in a president's Cabinet and a father to twins Buttigieg imagines a world where all people and families can be given the necessary tools to thrive. At the core of this conversation is Buttigieg's belief that hope propels us forward and gives us the necessary momentum to work towards a better country for all.
