Kensington Palace is home to the extended royal family: the aunts and cousins who need somewhere suitable to live. Its first royal occupants were William and Mary, who reigned from 1688. It was done quickly and cheaply and, says Anna Whitelock, 'it was all a bit of a botched job.'
