Great Scenic Railway Journeys

Journey to New Zealand were we profile the best rail journeys that country has to offer. We begin our railway adventure on the north island just south of Auckland. Here we'll take a trip back in time on one of New Zealand's premier heritage trains, the Glenbrook Vintage Railway. From there we venture to the North East coastal town of Coromandel and one of the most unique railways in the world. Our next stop takes us across the North Island, AND the south island. New Zealand's main lines are home to three scenic railroads, each with a different feel, The Overlander takes you through the heart of the North Island, while The Trans Coastal winds down the eastern coast of the south and the Trans Alpine you'll ride across the Southern Alps, past snowcapped mountains, through tunnels, and down to the coastal town of Greymouth. Get a true sense of the rugged terrain of the south island when we stop at Dunedin for the Taieri George railway. Then it's on to a train built for speed, the Kingston flyer. You'll learn the fascinating history of what brought this railway to this inland point and why it's locked in time. But it's not just the location that's unique. You'll see two locomotives that are the only two of their kind still in operation. For a steam journey of a different sort we board the steam ship TSS Earnslaw to learn why this was the second part of the rail's integral role in the rugged area around Queenstown.
