  • 1939 - Black singer Marian Anderson gives a concert at the Lincoln Memorial after being the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let her sing at Constitution Hall.
  • 1959 - NASA announces the selection of the United States' first seven astronauts, known as the "Mercury Seven".
