Surviving Breast Cancer is Focus of "NH Outlook" Special

(DURHAM, January 10, 2005) — Breast cancer survivors and cancer specialists share messages of hope and healing on NH Outlook, Wednesday, January 12 @ 10 p.m.NH Outlook host Beth Carroll talks with two participants in a 12-week writing/drama workshop in Hanover, where women put their experience with breast cancer into words and a stage production called "Bosom Buddies." Through their writing and the show, participants talk about cancer treatment and its consequences, confronting their fear of death, and how they now look at life differently. Betsy, one of the breast cancer survivors, discusses being diagnosed at age 26, and how, four years after nearly losing her life, she is the mother of two. Renee talks about how participating in the workshop helped her handle some emotional issues that resulted from having cancer. Leah Carey, a Broadway theatre alum, explains to Beth Carroll the power of theatre and why she got involved in directing the Bosom Buddies project. Best-selling author and NH resident Jodi Picoult was a co-facilitator of the project. Also on this episode of NH Outlook, several oncologists from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center discuss the latest treatments for breast cancer, as well as screening and prevention.NH Outlook is dedicated to in-depth discussion and analysis of current events, and statewide coverage of the people, places, politics, communities and culture that make the Granite State special. The series examines what cancer is, how people experience different types of cancer, what researchers are working on, and how we can screen for and prevent cancer.“Voices” presents the reality of life with cancer—told by cancer patients themselves, including a 28-year old woman, a young boy with leukemia and his family, and a man with both Hodgkin’s lymphoma and lung cancer. “New Directions,” airing January 19th, explores promising new treatments at various stages of development, and explains how new therapies are developed and tested. On January 26th, the final episode, “Prevention and Screening,” looks at ways to detect and “predict” cancer, and the decisions people make with that information.
