Alvirne and Inter-Lakes Vie for 22nd GSC Title

(DURHAM, May 24, 2005) — Question to question, buzzer to buzzer, high school teams across New Hampshire have been vying for the coveted SuperChallenge title since September. Who will emerge victorious? Find out this Thursday night @ 8 p.m., as Alvirne High School competes against Inter-Lakes High School during the 22nd Granite State SuperChallenge on New Hampshire Public Television.Granite State Challenge showcases New Hampshire high school academic teams squaring off over quick recall questions in all major disciplines—math, science, social studies, language arts and fine arts—with a few questions about current events, entertainment, sports, and New Hampshire people, places and events. Both teams are entering the finals with impressive wins this season. On the road to the finals, Alvirne defeated Timberlane Regional High School (390-30), Woodsville High School (305-245), Phillips Exeter Academy (340-245) and Con-Val Regional High School (330-230). The Inter-Lakes team defeated John Stark Regional High School (195-130), Newmarket Jr./Sr. High School (220-185), Campbell High School (260-250) and Portsmouth Christian Academy (295-285). While Alvirne has a young team this year – three juniors and one senior – the students are widely read and practice after school once a week, according to coaches Mary-Jane Ames and Marjorie Inderbitzen. The Broncos have made it to the finals twice before, winning each time (1989 and 1994). The all-senior Inter-Lakes Lakers are ready for their first Granite State SuperChallenge. According to coach Laurence Lougee, the students are well-read, knowledgeable and intellectually curious.
