Alvirne Defeats Inter-Lakes on NHPTV's GSC

(DURHAM, May 27, 2005) — Last night the Alvirne Broncos took the early lead in New Hampshire Public Television’s 22nd Granite State SuperChallenge, and never looked back. After seven intense rounds of questions, Alvirne High School emerged victorious over Inter-Lakes High School with a final score of 695-500.The season began in September, with 32 New Hampshire high school teams competing. Four rounds narrowed the field to the final two teams. Senior Craig Curran, and juniors Brandon Mansur, Jack Bouchard and Matt Doiron represented Alvirne. They were coached by Mary Jane Ames and Marjorie Inderbitzen. Competing for Inter-Lakes were seniors Peter Fallon, Peter Houhoulis, Mike Misiewicz and Kelsey Read. Laurence Lougee coached the team. In accepting the award on behalf of the team, Alvirne principal Bryan Lane said he was extremely proud of the team. “The students practiced hard all summer long, studying math, literature and history. They even practiced with a buzzer system set up at the school.” Principal Lane commended coaches Ames and Inderbitzen for their dedication, and added a note of thanks to New Hampshire Public Television and the Granite State Challenge sponsors for holding and supporting the competition. The Alvirne team reflected on their Granite State Challenge season by saying they were nervous about the contest with Woodsville High School, which was one of their closest matches (305-245), but the victory over Phillips Exeter Academy in the quarterfinals was “huge.”This is the third Granite State SuperChallenge title for the Alvirne Broncos; the school earned its other titles in 1989 and 1994. This was the first championship appearance for the Inter-Lakes Lakers.Granite State Challenge showcases New Hampshire high school academic teams squaring off over quick recall questions in all major disciplines—math, science, social studies, language arts and fine arts—with a few questions about current events, entertainment, sports, and New Hampshire people, places and events.
