(DURHAM, January 26, 2006) — More than two million Americans filed for bankruptcy in 2005. Experts estimate that as many as one in seven families are on the brink of financial collapse—one layoff, medical crisis or divorce away from financial disaster. In the past decade, consumer debt and bankruptcy have risen together. And New Hampshire residents have one of the highest overall debt levels in the country.Outlook on Money, airing on New Hampshire Public Television’s award-winning nightly newsmagazine NH Outlook Monday, January 30th @ 7:30 p.m., takes a look at the newly-enacted federal bankruptcy laws, and talks with local experts who offer advice on what to do if you’re drowning in debt.The program features a New Hampshire couple filing for bankruptcy, examines the events leading up to their decision, and follows them through the filing process. NH Outlook host Beth Carroll will interview a bankruptcy attorney and the executive director of Consumer Credit Counseling Services. Outlook on Money is a unique series designed to help people of all ages and income levels establish and maintain financial security. Whether it's learning to live on a budget, teaching children to spend and save wisely, planning for college and retirement, or starting your own business, “Outlook on Money” offers advice from experts around the state. Beyond the 12 stories that are part of the series, Outlook on Money will be made available to schools, libraries, and community groups. Content for the series was contributed by 20 economic assistance and guidance organizations in the state, among them NH Jump$tart Coalition, Fannie CLAC and UNH Cooperative Extension.The special project was launched through the assistance of a $50,000 grant from Citizens Bank Foundation.
