Micheael Wood, BBC and PBS Filmmaker, to Speak at UNH During "Classics Week In NH"

- Public Invited to Meet Wood October 23rd Before Lecture -

(DURHAM, October 15, 2007) - Michael Wood, renown BBC and PBS filmmaker, will present a series of lectures on the classics during Classics Week at the University of New Hampshire October 22 - 26th. New Hampshire Public Television will host a pre-lecture reception for the British filmmaker Tuesday, October 23rd at 5 p.m. in the Wildcat Den in UNH's Memorial Union Building. Governor John Lynch has designated the fourth week of October as Classics Week in New Hampshire, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the John C. Rouman Classical Lecture Series. UNH will hold a series of events as part of its celebration of the lecture series, which culminates with Wood's lecture "The Point of the Classics: The Enduring Image of Greece." All events are open to the public. New Hampshire Public Television is currently airing Wood's "In Search of Myths and Heroes" (see www.nhptv.org/schedule for airdates). With more than 70 documentary films to his credit, Wood is the writer and host of many critically acclaimed series on PBS, including "Art of the Western World," "Legacy," "Conquistadors," "Shakespeare" and "In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great." More than a dozen of his films have focused on Greek history, among them the Emmy-nominated "In Search of the Trojan War." "Wood is an exhilarating speaker who, in person and on film, brings the past to life again, passionately showing the interconnections between the ancient and medieval worlds and our own. Ancient Greece has been a continual source of inspiration for him, and the university is pleased to have him on campus to share his love of the classical world," said Stephen Trzaskoma, associate professor and coordinator of UNH Ancient Greek Program. The Rouman series began in 1997 with a grant from the Christos and Mary Papoutsy Charitable Foundation. The series is named for John C. Rouman, who taught for decades at UNH and served as the chair of the Classics Program. Topics explored by the series have covered a range of subjects within Greco-Roman civilization, including mythology, literature, history, art, philosophy, and language, and feature lectures delivered by internationally recognized speakers and scholars.
