NHPTV's Student Documentary Film Project Seeks Students To Film Oral Histories of NH Veterans

(DURHAM, October 12, 2007) - Every veteran and every community in New Hampshire has a wartime story to share, and New Hampshire Public Television has two avenues for capturing these important narratives. Students interested in filmmaking and preserving New Hampshire's stories are invited to "make history" by producing a 5 - 20 minute film incorporating oral history interviews with individuals affected by past or present wars. As part of New Hampshire Public Television's "Connecting and Collecting New Hampshire's War Stories" community engagement project, students in grades 6 - college are invited to be part of a statewide effort to record and preserve the Granite State's war stories for future generations. Submissions to the NH War Stories: Student Documentary Project, either from individuals or through a class or group entry, are eligible to be posted on NHPTV's website, and will be considered for broadcast on NHPTV's public affairs program, NH Outlook. Also, the top submissions from these young filmmakers will be recognized in April 2008 at a ceremony at the NHPTV Broadcast Center in Durham. Entries will be accepted through January 31, 2008; submission guidelines and forms are available at www.nhptv.org/thewar. Teachers interested in learning how to collect and videotape oral histories can contact NHPTV's Knowledge Network to learn about teacher workshops; the next workshop is slated for November 9th. New Hampshire Public Television is also reaching out to our state's veterans by encouraging participation in the Veterans History Project. Additionally, World War II veterans are encouraged to submit their stories to a national online "Share Your Story" database. Both of these are available at www.nhptv.org/thewar. These oral history projects are an offshoot of a national outreach project from Ken Burns' new documentary series, The War, which recently aired on NHPTV. The seven-part series by New Hampshire's own Ken Burns explored an American perspective of the history and horror of the Second World War, through personal accounts from the homefront to the frontlines. NH OUTLOOK - NH'S WAR STORIES online anytime:NH Outlook, NHPTV's award-winning public affairs program, recently aired a two-part special focusing on NH's war stories. Topics included the Veterans History Project, stories about a Bataan Death March survivor, a concentration camp liberator, and five Claremont brothers who fought for their new country. The program also showed how the Portsmouth Navy Yard was critical to naval defense during WWII. These programs are available for viewing anytime at www.nhptv.org/thewar/outlook.asp.
