NHPTV and UNH To No Longer Broadcast Men’s Ice Hockey Games

(DURHAM, June 6, 2008) — As a result of declining external funding support and rising production costs, the University of New Hampshire Athletic Department and New Hampshire Public Television (NHPTV) announced today that UNH men’s ice hockey games will not be broadcast on NHPTV during the 2008-2009 season. The athletic department is looking into other options to air as many games as possible during the 2008-09 season. The Wildcats will once again be a focal point of Hockey East’s Friday Night Hockey game package. Over the past five years, NHPTV has typically aired 10 live home games each season from the Whittemore Center Arena, and offered live and archived webcasts of those games.“While we regret we are no longer able to continue our broadcast relationship with NHPTV, we are extremely optimistic that we can find a forum for UNH men’s hockey on television for the legions of UNH fans in New Hampshire and the surrounding area,” said UNH Athletic Director Marty Scarano. “I’d like to thank NHPTV and its production team for their outstanding, award-winning coverage of our men’s ice hockey games and athletics in general over the years.” “We appreciate the enthusiasm UNH hockey fans have shown for our broadcasts and webcasts of the Wildcat games,” noted NHPTV CEO and General Manager Peter A. Frid, “and we’re gratified that our play-by-play coverage of the games has won numerous awards over the years. However, without sufficient funding to cover the costs of producing the broadcasts, we can no longer continue to air the games. We anticipate that UNH Athletics will find other broadcast opportunities for the games, and wish the team every success this season and forward.” ~unh~
