Noted Financial Journalist Myron Kandel Hosts 3-Part Financial Management Series Premiering 11/23

(DURHAM, November 14, 2008) – With the recent upheavals in our nation’s economy, it’s more important than ever to be financially literate. On More Than Money: An Investor Survival Guide, host and founding financial editor of CNN Myron Kandel talks with local experts about managing money during difficult times. NH Outlook host Beth Carroll interviews Granite Staters who have learned how to be more financially savvy. The three-part series premieres 11/23 @ 9:30 a.m. and continues Sundays @ 9:30 a.m. and Mondays @ 6 p.m. through 12/8, only on New Hampshire Public Television.According to an AARP study, most of us spend more time planning a summer vacation than we do our retirement. For those over 40, retirement planning is the number one money concern, yet most have saved less than $50,000. The series explores what steps we should take to secure our financial future, especially in these uncertain times.“Investors need to take charge of their own financial destinies,” says Kandel. “This special NHPTV series provides a comprehensive and informative guide to investor survival, told in terms of individual experiences and advice from the experts.” Kandel is the president of the New Hampshire-based Initiative for Corporate Responsibility and Investor Protection.More Than Money: An Investor Survival Guide focuses on three key topics: investing in turbulent times, building and preserving a nest egg, and avoiding being taken in by a financial scam.In part one of An Investor Survival Guide, Kandel looks at what history tells us about our current financial crisis. Carroll talks with an Amherst man who took charge of his personal finances when his pension plan was eliminated. He began to focus on a personal investing plan and soon discovered that being an informed investor is the quickest way to hold on to more of your money. Airs: 11/23 @ 9:30 a.m. and again 11/24 @ 6 p.m.In part two, Kandel explores when we should start building a nest egg, and how to preserve it. An estimated 8,000 baby-boomers turn 60 every day. But more and more of them aren’t planning to retire because they haven’t built up the savings to do so. And those who have savings have seen big losses in the ongoing financial crisis. A 65-year-old woman from Nottingham learns it’s never too late to invest in the future and talks with Carroll about rebuilding her retirement fund after it was devastated by medical bills. Airs: 11/30 @ 9:30 a.m. and again 12/1 @ 6 p.m.In part three Kandel focuses on financial scams and how to avoid falling victim to con artists. Nationally, 30% of investor complaints come from seniors; but, in New Hampshire it is closer to 50%. Most of the actions taken by state securities regulators stem from complaints from those over 60. Carroll talks with a 50-year-old Manchester man who became a victim of investor fraud, losing thousands to a commodities market scheme. He shares his story so that others might learn from his mistake. Airs: 12/7 @ 9:30 a.m. and again, 12/8 @ 6 p.m.The Initiative for Corporate Responsibility and Investor Protection is a non-partisan organization whose mission is to promote the highest nationwide standards of corporate responsibility and investor protection. The Initiative was created in the aftermath of the corporate and Wall Street scandals as a result of a settlement negotiated by the New Hampshire Bureau of Securities Regulation. www.theinitiative.net.
