New Hampshire Students to Cast Votes

Students to Participate in National Mock Election Wed., Oct. 29; Results Announced Oct. 30

(DURHAM, October 28, 2008) — Students in schools across New Hampshire will be going to the “polls” Wednesday, October 29 to cast their votes for candidates for the offices of president, governor, U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. New Hampshire Public Television, which is sponsoring the New Hampshire Mock Election, is tallying the votes from an anticipated 40,000 student participants from over 100 schools. Results will be posted on the New Hampshire Public Television Mock Election website nhptv.org/mockelection, and announced at the New Hampshire Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference October 30.The New Hampshire Mock Election, now in its 14th year, provides students with an opportunity to participate in the electoral process. As part of the process, students have been encouraged to research candidates and learning more about politics, elections and issues. There are now 70 million youth and children under the age of 18 in the United States—the largest ever generation in this age group. New Hampshire’s intense effort to provide civic education and activities to these school-aged children and youth will help move the United States towards achieving a nation of voters.Curriculum materials and candidate profiles are available on the New Hampshire Mock Election website nhptv.org/mockelection.
