Gwen Ifill Speaks at NHPTV Women of Influence Event

Gwen Ifill of Washington Week and PBS NewsHour Is Guest Speaker at NHPTV Women of Influence Luncheon– UNH Manchester Student Receives $2,500 Scholarship – (Durham, November 13, 2009) – Speaking to a group of 200 at the 2009 New Hampshire Public Television Women of Influence luncheon in Bedford on November 5th, Gwen Ifill of Washington Week and PBS NewsHour spoke about the media’s shifting role and its responsibility to inform and support civilized discourse, as well as her own career as a reporter, correspondent and moderator. The event brought together individuals who have contributed to the advancement of women in leadership positions. At the luncheon, the 2009 Charter Charitable Foundation Scholarship for Communications/Media Students for $2,500 was awarded to Meghan Marcus of Merrimack. The UNH Manchester student was recognized for outstanding work and for holding great promise in communications, and particularly public broadcasting. Ms. Marcus intends to pursue a career in researching and producing historical films upon completing a bachelor’s degree in communication arts, with a minor in history, upon graduation in 2010. Ifill is moderator and managing editor for Washington Week and senior correspondent for The PBS NewsHour. She has interviewed newsmakers and reported on issues ranging from foreign affairs to politics for PBS, NBC News, The New York Times, and the Washington Post. Ifill, who has covered six presidential elections and moderated the vice presidential debates during the 2004 and 2008 elections, is the author of The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama (2008).Proceeds from the event support New Hampshire Public Television’s award-winning programs and services. Chairing the event were Barbara A.M. Maloney, Esq. and Barbara A. Pitsch, Ed.D. The planning committee included Carolyn Benthien of Benthien Associates; Karol LaCroix, president of Granite State College and member of the NHPTV Board of Directors; Kit Reno; and Carol-Lynn Saliba, executive VP and director of retail banking for Citizens Bank.
