Be a Berlin Storyteller for the Our Hometown Series

NHPBS invites those who live in, love and know Berlin to share their stories

(DURHAM, SEPTEMBER 22, 2023) — No one knows your hometown better than you. That's why New Hampshire PBS is coming to Berlin and inviting you to share your stories about the northernmost city in New Hampshire that sits along the Androscoggin River. OUR HOMETOWN: BERLIN will be the eleventh episode in the series and is hosted by New Hampshire author and storyteller Rebecca Rule. People who want to tell their stories can reach out to NHPBS producers who will host an OUR HOMETOWN storytellers connector’s meeting on Tuesday, October 3rd at 1:30 PM at the Historical Society’s Berlin Falls House.

“The OUR HOMETOWN team will be in Berlin to meet with anyone interested in learning more about our show and how to tell a good story,” says Schuyler Scribner, producer of the OUR HOMETOWN series. “We’re also eager to capture the stunning scenery, iconic hometown places and explore why Berlin’s nickname is ‘The City That Trees Built.’”

The OUR HOMETOWN storytellers gathering encourages people to share stories that define their town, stories that are part of a town’s identity, and personal stories that explore their relationship with the town. NHPBS encourages Berlin residents and businesses to learn about the program, how to tell a story for television, and prepare for production day.

“These could be stories about the town in the present, from the past, or ones that reflect hopes for the future,” says assistant producer Jasmine Torres Allen who has been connecting with local librarians, historical society members and town officials. “We really want to know what makes Berlin so unique, and we want you to tell the story.”

The premise of the OUR HOMETOWN series is that each New Hampshire town and city has a unique story to tell, and the people who live there are the best storytellers for their hometowns. The series is exploring the culture, commerce, history and people of New Hampshire's 221 towns and 13 cities. OUR HOMETOWN: BERLIN will air in 2024 on New Hampshire PBS and online.

Produced in partnership with the community, each OUR HOMETOWN program engages residents in telling their stories, which are then taped and edited into a 30-minute television program for broadcast on NHPBS. The program and all the interviews are posted on the program’s website, nhpbs.org/hometown.
