(DURHAM, January 10, 2007) — Calling all young artists and writers in kindergarten through 5th grade! It’s time to start writing and illustrating your original stories to enter into the Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest sponsored by New Hampshire Public Television. This is the 13th year NHPTV is offering the contest, which encourages children’s love for reading, writing, and drawing. Last year, more than 500 children submitted stories to NHPTV. Reading Rainbow, a PBS program that builds lasting friendships between children and books, airs on New Hampshire Public Television weekdays @ 2 p.m.Due to the popularity of the contest in New Hampshire, NHPTV has added a local contest for students in grades 4-5. Kindergarteners through fifth graders enter by creating an original story with illustrations and submitting it with an official entry form to NHPTV. A panel of judges will review all entries in April, and first-, second- and third-place winners will be selected in each grade level. “Parents and teachers often tell us how much children enjoy writing and illustrating stories to enter the Reading Rainbow contest,” says Kelly Clark, Chief Operating Officer/Assistant General Manager. “The contest is one of our key efforts to promote literacy and creativity in children.”The Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest began January 1. The deadline for entries to be received by New Hampshire Public Television is Saturday, March 24, 2007. Contest rules and entry forms, as well as previous winning entries, are available at www.nhptv.org/kidswrite. Information also is available by calling the NHPTV Knowledge Network at (603) 868-4364.The Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest is made possible by support from NEA New Hampshire.
