 AMERICAN REVOLUTION HISTORY ON THIS DATE

1775 – Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec leaves Cambridge, Massachusetts.

1776 – British-American peace conference on Staten Island fails to stop the nascent American Revolutionary War.

1777 – American Revolutionary War: Battle of Brandywine: The British celebrate a major victory in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

1780 – American Revolutionary War: Sugarloaf massacre: A small detachment of militia from Northampton County, Pennsylvania, is attacked by Native Americans and Loyalists near Little Nescopeck Creek.

ON THIS DATE

  • 1789 - Alexander Hamilton is appointed the first Secretary of the Treasury.
  • 1941 -  Construction begins on The Pentagon.
  • 1954 - Hurricane Edna hits New England.
  • 1962 - The Beatles record their first singles, "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You."
  • 2001 - Four planes were hijacked by terrorists.  Two flew into the World Trade Center in New York. One crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers overpowered the terrorists.
