- 1789 - Alexander Hamilton is appointed the first secretary of the treasury.
- 1941 - Construction begins on The Pentagon.
- 1954 - Hurricane Edna hits New England.
- 1962 - The Beatles record their first singles, "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You,"
- 2001 - Four planes were hijacked by terrorists. Two flew into the World Trade Center in New York. One crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers overpowered the terrorists.
