  • 1885 - Louis Pasteur successfully tests his vaccine against rabies on a boy who was bitten by a rabid dog.
  • 1942 - Anne Frank and her family go into hiding in Amsterdam.
  • 1944 -  Jackie Robinson refuses to move to the back of an Army bus and later faces a court-martial.
  • 1944 - 168 people die and 700 are injured in a fire at an afternoon performance of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Hartford, CT.
  • 1957 - Althea Gibson becomes the first black athlete to win a Wimbledon championship.
