- 1184 BC - Troy is sacked and burned during the Trojan War.
- 1776 - The Continental Congress appoints Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston to the Committee of Five to draft a declaration of independence.
- 1837 - The Broad Street Riot breaks out in Boston.
- 1919 - Sir Barton wins the Belmont Stakes and becomes the first horse to win the Triple Crown.
- 1963 - Alabama governor. George Wallace confronts federal troops in an effort to block a court-ordered directive to allow black students to attend the University of Alabama.
- 1970 - Anna Mae Hays and Elizabeth P. Hoisington become the first female U.S. Army Generals.
