1609- Shakespeare's sonnets are published in London.
1861 - North Carolina votes to secede from the Union.
1862 - President Lincoln signs the Homestead Act into law, opening 84 million acres of public land to settlers.
1873 - Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis receive a patent for blue jeans with copper rivets.
1902 - Cuba gains independence from the United States.
1927 - Charles Lindbergh takes off for Paris from Roosevelt Field in Long Island, N.Y., aboard the Spirit of St. Louis on the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean.
1932 - Amelia Earhart begins the first solo nonstop flight by a female pilot across the Atlantic Ocean, taking off from Newfoundland and landing in Ireland.
