  • 1775 - Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys capture Fort Ticonderoga.
  • 1775 - The Second Continental Congress takes place in Philadelphia.
  • 1849 - A least 22 people are killed and 120 injured when a riot breaks out at the Astor Opera House in New York City, in what became known as the  Astor Place Riot.
  • 1869 - A golden spike was driven at  Promontory, Utah, marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S.
  • 1872 - Suffragist Victoria Woodhull becomes the first woman to run for President of the United States.
  • 1908 -  Mother's Day is observed for the first time in the United States, in Grafton, West Virginia.
  • 1940 - Winston Churchill is appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain.
  • 1962 -  Marvel Comics publishes the first issue of The Incredible Hulk
  • 1994 -  Nelson Mandela is inaugurated as South Africa's first black president.
